In 1871, the mighty Mississippi River broke through the levee near what is now known as the Bonnet Carre Spillway, and cut a wide channel to Lake Pontchartrain.
The levee break is called a "crevasse". The location of Christmas in the Crevasse was part of the channel carved by the Mississippi river over 140 years ago.
